LIT ELECTRICAL TASMANIA

Heat Pump Installation & Servicing

Heat pumps are the most energy-efficient way to heat and cool your Hobart home. We handle the electrical side — dedicated circuits, correct cable sizing, and safe connection — so your system runs efficiently from day one.

What's Included

  • Electrical assessment for heat pump circuit requirements
  • Dedicated circuit installation from switchboard
  • Cable run and conduit installation
  • Electrical connection of indoor and outdoor units
  • Isolator switch installation at the outdoor unit
  • Testing and commissioning of electrical supply

Hobart's climate makes heat pumps an excellent choice for year-round comfort. Modern inverter heat pumps can heat your home efficiently even when temperatures drop below zero — and they double as air conditioning in summer. But a heat pump is only as reliable as its electrical supply. Undersized wiring, missing isolator switches, or overloaded circuits cause nuisance tripping and can shorten the life of the unit.

We install dedicated electrical circuits for heat pumps of all sizes, from small 2.5kW split systems for bedrooms through to large ducted systems for whole-of-home heating. Every installation includes correctly rated cable, a dedicated circuit breaker at the switchboard, and an isolator switch at the outdoor unit as required by Australian Standards. We work with all major brands including Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu, and Panasonic.

Whether you're adding a heat pump to an older Hobart home that needs a new circuit run from the switchboard, or wiring multiple units for a new build, we'll make sure the electrical infrastructure is right. If your existing switchboard doesn't have capacity for a new circuit, we can discuss a switchboard upgrade as part of the project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a dedicated circuit for my heat pump?
Yes. Heat pumps draw significant current, especially during start-up, and Australian Standards require a dedicated circuit. We'll install the correct cable size and breaker rating for your specific unit, ensuring reliable operation without tripping.
Can my existing switchboard handle a heat pump?
Most modern switchboards can accommodate an additional circuit for a heat pump. If your board is older or already at capacity, we may recommend a switchboard upgrade at the same time. We'll assess this during our initial visit and let you know upfront.
How long does the electrical installation take?
The electrical work for a standard split system heat pump typically takes 2-4 hours, depending on the cable run distance from your switchboard to the unit location. Ducted systems or multi-split installations take longer due to multiple connection points.
Do you install the heat pump unit itself, or just the electrical?
We handle the electrical connection and wiring. The refrigeration side — mounting the unit, running refrigerant lines, and gas charging — is done by a licensed refrigeration technician. We often coordinate with HVAC installers to get everything done in one visit.
